Is anything being done right in Sindh, asks CJP

Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Mian Saqib Nisar on Wednesday questioned if any work in Sindh is being done in adherence to the law. “Is there anything that is being done right in Sindh,” Justice Nisar asked the provincial advocate general during a hearing of a suo motu notice at the top court’s Karachi Registry. The Supreme Court had taken a suo motu notice of the use of luxury vehicles by federal and provincial ministers and government officers beyond their entitlement. Justice Nisar’s comments came as Sindh Advocate General Barrister Zameer Hussain Ghumro informed the three-judge bench that 149 luxury vehicles in the use of ministers and other officers beyond their entitlement had been recovered from the Sindh government. To this, the CJP asked where the recovered cars had been parked and if there was a framework regarding their use in the future. “There is a central pool of cars and we have prepared a framework regarding the use of the vehicles,” the Sindh advocate general...

In-form Ronaldo looms for Morocco, Spain face Iran

ROSTOV-ON-DON, RUSSIA: Cristiano Ronaldo will hone in on Morocco on Wednesday after his stunning hat-trick in Portugal´s World Cup opener, while 2010 winners Spain play Iran in Group B. The five-time world player of the year bagged a sublime treble against Spain in the heat of Sochi on Friday in Russia 2018´s stand-out match so far, the 51st of his glittering career. "I´m very happy, it´s a nice personal record to have, one more in my career," Ronaldo said on Tuesday. "For me the most important thing is to emphasise what the team did against one of the favourites to win this World Cup." Spain head to Kazan to face Iran still counting the cost of a chaotic run-up to the tournament during which Julen Lopetegui was sensationally sacked just two days before they opened their campaign. Former international defender Fernando Hierro is now at the helm but barely a week into the tournament Spain -- expected to join Brazil, Germany and France in the latter stages -- have...

US withdraws from UN Human Rights Council over anti-Israel bias

The United States has announced its withdrawal from the United Nation Human Rights Council (UNHRC) over what it calls the body’s entrenched bias against Israel. The announcement was made by US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley alongside US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo at the State Department in Washington on Tuesday. The US administration accused the UNHRC of hypocrisy and harshly denounced the 47-nation body as biased against the Tel Aviv regime. "For too long the Human Rights Council has been a protector of human rights abusers and a cesspool of political bias. Regrettably, it is now clear that our call for reform was not headed,” Haley said. “Human rights abusers continue to serve on and be elected to the council … Therefore, as we said we would do a year ago, if we did not see any progress, the United States is officially withdrawing from the UN Human Rights Council,” she added. Haley accused governments with woeful human rights records of seeking a seat on...

Of the 857 million guns owned by civilians, 393 million are in the United States - more than all of the firearms held by ordinary citizens in the other top 25 countries combined. "The biggest force pushing up gun ownership around the world is civilian ownership in the United States," said Aaron Karp, one of the authors of the report which compiles new data from t...
