PM Khan to lay foundation of Mohmand Dam on May 2

Prime Minister Imran Khan to perform ground-breaking of Mohmand Dam on May 2
Prime Minister Imran Khan will perform the ground-breaking of Mohmand Dam on May 2, Senator Faisal Javed said on Tuesday.

The Senator made the announcement on Twitter, saying: “Prime Minister Imran Khan to perform the ground-breaking of Mohmand Dam on 2nd May 2019. Special thanks to all the donors who are contributing for this great cause.”

After its construction, Mohmand dam will be able to store 300,000 cusecs of water.

The dam has gross capacity of 1.9 million acre feet (MAF), live capacity 0.67 MAF with power generation potential of 800 megawatts (MW) and annual energy production of 2862 GWh.

The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) in March awarded long delayed contract for civil and electro-mechanical works of Mohmand Dam Project to a joint venture comprising the China Gezhouba Group of Companies (CGGC) of China as the lead firm and Descon engineering company of Pakistan as its partner.

The final contract is worth Rs183.523 billion, saving Rs18 billion from the approved PC-I.

Mohmand Dam hydropower project is being constructed on River Swat in tribal district Mohmand of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The project is scheduled to be completed in five years and eight months.

The new toll announced by the national disaster agency was almost double the previous figure. Indonesian vice-president Jusuf Kalla said the final number of dead could be in the "thousands." "It feels very tense," said 35-year-old mother Risa Kusuma, comforting her feverish baby boy at an evacuation centre in the gutted coastal city of Palu. "Every minute an ambulance brings in bodies. Clean water is scarce. The minimarkets are looted everywhere." Indonesia’s Metro TV on Sunday broadcast footage from a coastal community in Donggala, close to the epicentre of the quake, where some waterfront homes appeared crushed but a resident said most people fled to higher ground after the quake struck. "When it shook really hard, we all ran up into the hills," a ...
